Global Classroom - presentation of the project to pupils of elementary schools

  Global Classroom

Global Classroom is a unique project, the beginnings of which date back to 1997 when the first conference was held in Lerwick at the Shetland Islands, in which 10 students from each involved country participated: the United Kindgom, Germany, Sweden, Japan, South Africa and Czech Republic.

This year already the 13th conference was held in the American state New Jersey. Students of the organizing country elect the topic of the conference (the topic in the USA was "Immigration") and discuss the raised issue in international groups for the period of one week.

Participation in the conference represents a unique experience for all participants; it involves learning the life at other schools, in the homes of other students and, last but not least, it is of relevance for improvement of English language skills.

The grammar school "Gymnázium Zlín-Lesní čtvrť" organized the conference in 2002 and 2008.

Students of the grammar school talked about their experience with the Global Classroom project and their this year's stay in the USA with their younger colleagues from elementary schools in Zlín. Their presentation was held in the Bata Villa in Zlín on Friday 8 October 2010.

The 2010 Wood Scultpure Symposium ”WOOD 2010”

  wood 2009

Opening of the symposium will be held on Wednesday 24 June 2010 from 6 p.m. in the garden of the Villa Tomas Bata. You are all welcome.

The twelfth year of the International Student Sculpture Symposium „ Wood - Dřevo 2010“ was opened by the Thomas Bata Foundation rather non-traditionally, earlier than usually, on 14 June 2010. The invitation to participate was accepted by students from art colleges in Poland, Slovakia, Austria and Czech Republic. 6 students will took part this year. The students will work continuously in the premises of the Bata Villa for 10 days and their efforts will be concluded by a presentation of the new sculptures at the exhibition opening held on 23 June 2010 from 18:00 pm in the gardens of the Bata Villa. The exhibition opening is open to the public for free.

The objective of the Foundation is, in the spirit of former Bata traditions, to develop the talent of your artists, give them space to execute their ideas, to try working with different materials and devices and to present their works to the public. This year the students may work with a hundred years old oaks. Oak wood ranks among the most suitable materials for sculpting work due to its properties. The gardens and premises of the Bata Villa have become the ideal space for exhibiting the wooden sculptures; currently more than 30 works of art are exhibited in this “Sculpture gallery in the open".

This year’s symposium will offer one specialty, when all the participating sculptors will work jointly on a wooden sculpture during Saturday, which will be created from a huge elm tree in the park opposite the Bata Villa. The son of the late prominent Slovak sculptor Rudolf Uher, the academic architect Michal Uher (Expert Guarantor of the symposium), created a model of a sculpture based on the sketch of his father, which will be the subject of activity of our young sculptors under the supervision of the experienced artist. The new object will culturally enhance the park “under the lime trees”.

The history of the sculpting symposia organized by the Tomas Bata Foundation for students of both local and international art colleges dates back to 1999. In 1999 the Foundation organized its first own symposium with a free topic and the material worked was wood. The year before the Foundation was involved in a workshop in the stone quarry near Žlutava as one of the organizers, where students worked with stone.

The workshop is organized and financed by the Foundation, with the gratuitous help of the following companies: Baťovy lesy a statky, Husqvarna, Pozimos, Švehlák nářadí, Renomix and others.

Results of the finals of the competition Test Your Managerial Skills held on 4 May 2010 in Prague

The most successful managers are again the students of VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava.

The interest of Czech university students in the competion Test Your Managerial Skills is growing year after year.

225 student couples from 25 Czech high education institutions took part in the 3rd year of the competition organized by the non-profit educational organization Junior Achievement and The Tomas Bata Foundation in Zlín. The competition was severe and so the goal of everybody was to succeed in the basic and semifinal rounds and win through to the Prague finals held at the seat of the company Hewlett Packard on 4 May 2010, where eight best manager teams competed for valuable prizes awarded by the partner of the competition, the company Hewlett Packard. The management and economic simulation exercise JA TITAN (simulation accessible via the Internet at http://titan.ja.org) demonstrates to students decision-making within a company and helps them understand the basic market principles. The students represent individual companies, which exist on the same market, sell the same product and compete one with another. In the final round the teams had to deal not only with the launching of a new product on the market, but also with big fluctuations in the demand due to seasonality of the economic cycle of the imaginary product. The following economy students coped best with these difficult conditions and brought their company to the winner's rostrum:

1st place

Martina Palonciová and Stanislav Rejchrt

VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava

2nd place

Martin Kabát and Stanislav Pouska

University of West Bohemia in Pilsen

3rd place

Klára Trávníková and Jan Rojíček

VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava

The winning students brought to Ostrava and Pilsen mini notebooks HP, external harddiscs with a capacity of 500 GB and LCD monitors. We believe that they will use these great prizes during their futher studies or managerial practice.

The Message of Thomas Bata regarding the Economic Depression

  plakát Dřevo 2009

Where are the roots of the economic depression?

The world lived too long relying on disproportionately high economic figures. Businessmen from major countries got used to long rows of nulls in their books. They preferred not selling to selling cheaper. The current situation is an evidence of natural economic laws pushing with their weight life on the soil of reality.

How to resist an economic depression?

Through work. During a crisis the work efforts must be doubled at all cost until we finally find a gound, where the customer may buy and the business thus grow. Entrepreneurs and responsible economic leaders must be determined, self-confident and optimistic. They have to realize that nobody else will solve their troubles and that they cannot escape them.

Protectionism?

This contradiction between theory and practice rests in that laws and political interventions will much rather make inefficient entrepreneurs from efficient ones than the opposite. Incompetent entrepreneurs, who managed to convince politicians that it is in the interest of the state to protect their incompetency, are hiding behind protectionism.

The thing is to make a lifelong occupation from business and trading, not only an opportunity to rob people for several years and then retire.

Major European countries need men, who are affraid neither of the anger of entrepreneurs, who will be forced to count on loosing a part of their capital, nor of the curses of millions of workers, who will be forced to temporarily put up with lower wages. Such intervention in all countries is the only means to stabilizing economic conditions of those countries, reduction of prices, increase of wages and will result not only in a boom of entrepreneurship, but the entire Europe and humankind will benefit.

Once you, entrepreneurs, achieve wealth and power through your business, remember the words of Jesus: "The one, who wants to be the most powerful among you, let be your servant". Remember that your powers, abilities belong to the public. Remember that property, circulating money in your business have about the same importance for your colleagues as your blood in your body has for you.

Manager in Rough

  manažerem nanečisto

The Thomas Bata Foundation and Junior Achievement organized very interesting, entertaining and, most practical computer simulation called JA Titan, whose aim was not only to test the management decisions in the company and see and understand their impact on the market, but also to verify the knowledge of a foreign language. And it's all been "painless", without the risk of bankruptcy and possibly execution.

This year the competition was "Manager in rough" invited students of all universities and universities in the Czech Republic, which have economic, managerial, business or commercial interests. The competition took place in the English language and is appropriate for students of lower classes who do not yet have enough knowledge in the field. A condition of entry into the competition was to build a two-team. The competition did not require precise knowledge of the economy and it can be complete only with the use of so-called "common sense" and intuition.

The competition was supported by Hewlett-Packard, which sponsored the main prizes. The main prize was the HP iPAQ, for the 2nd place of LCD monitors and HP for the 3rd place PhotoSmart printer. Next 5 teams won the small prizes in the final.
